SaaStr 的 Jason Lemkin 重估智能体时代优秀销售素质,九条旧标准重新分级并新增一条
The 9 Qualities of a Great Sales Rep
Dear SaaStr: What qualities do the great salespeople have?
When I'm ready to buy,
A great sales rep makes it easier. And better. And gets all my questions answered.
A mediocre rep just makes it harder.
— Jason ✨👾SaaStr.Ai✨ Lemkin (@jasonlk) April 2, 2022
I first wrote this list for a world where humans did all of sales. That isn’t our world anymore.
Today our sales team is 1.5 people. We got there through natural attrition with no backfill, not layoffs. AI agents now do all of our outbound and all of our SDR work. Our inbound agent has run 442,000 chats, booked 614 meetings, and closed $1M+. Our AI SDR sends 3,221 emails a month from a single platform, versus 75 to 285 per month per human SDR before it. And we’re doing more revenue than we did with the old team, well into eight figures.
So I went back through the original nine qualities with one question: which ones still matter when agents handle the top of the funnel, the follow-up, the prep, and the CRM?
Most of them still matter. But the bar moved on almost every one. A few got commoditized by agents. A few became more valuable than ever. And there’s one new one.
#1. They Really, Trult Listen. Agents Still Can’t Do This (Fully) Inside a Live Call.
Mediocre reps run the script. Great reps learn the prospect’s real pain before they pitch anything. That hasn’t changed.
What has changed: every AI sales tool shipped in the last two years runs before the meeting or after it. Research, prep, follow-up, call summaries, CRM capture, coaching on the recording. Almost nothing works inside the meeting, in real time, while a VP of Sales is explaining why the last three vendors failed.
That 30 or 60 minutes is now where a human rep earns their seat. If a rep doesn’t listen in that window, there isn’t much left that an agent can’t do instead.
#2. They Adjust the Pitch to Suit the Prospect. Agents Do This at Scale Now. Humans Do It Mid-Sentence.
Personalization used to be a human skill and a big differentiator. Agents now do it at 10x to 40x the volume of a human SDR, and the response rates on our warm segments ran 11% to 12%, in line with or better than what our human SDRs got from the same kinds of lists.
Personalizing the first touch is solved. What’s left for humans is adjusting in real time when the buyer says something in minute 12 that changes the whole deal. The CFO joins unexpectedly. The champion mentions a reorg. The use case they came in with turns out to be the wrong one. The best reps pivot the demo, the case study, and the pricing conversation on the spot.
#3. They Treat Every Prospect Like They Matter. The Agents Beat Most Reps Here.
The best reps never made a smaller prospect feel small. That was always rare.
Agents do it by default. Our AI SDR booked a six-figure meeting at 6:02 PM on a Saturday. It answers a $5K prospect with the same speed and depth as a $500K one, every time, at any hour.
The flip side showed up when our AI VP of Marketing, 10K, got hooked into finance. It found two customers who had been paying us $300 a month for SaaStr Pro for roughly six years with no support at all. Nobody had looked at them in years because they were small.
A human rep who triages small accounts out now loses to the agent on this quality. The rep’s job is to be at least as attentive as the agent, and then add judgment on top.
#4. They Actually Help You. This Quality Went Up in Value.
The best B2B reps were always mini solution architects. How to run the pilot. Who to socialize it with internally. Where to get buy-in.
The headcount data says this is the part of sales companies are protecting. Emergence Capital surveyed 560+ venture-backed B2B companies: 36% cut SDR headcount, but only 14% cut sales engineers, 28% grew their AE teams, and 34% grew professional services. The roles that help the customer implement and succeed grew. The roles that set meetings shrank.
Enterprise buyers still love a rep who makes their life easier and acts as an advocate inside the buying process. That’s now most of what a human AE is for.
#5. They Know the Product Cold. This Went From Differentiator to Minimum Bar.
Last year I wrote that 95% of human SDRs can’t answer a hard question from a VP of Engineering, a CPO, or a CIO. They have to go find a human who can.
A well-trained AI agent can answer that question at 2 AM, with specifics, on the first touch. Our inbound agent does it every day.
That changes the job for the human who takes the meeting. By the time a buyer gets to your AE, they’ve already had deep answers from your agent and from their own AI tools. A rep who knows less about the product than your own inbound agent is a step down in the buying experience. Buyers notice.
#6. They Create Urgency, Even When There Isn’t Any. Still the Hardest, and Still Muchly Human.
Almost nobody needs to buy your product today. The best reps make the cost of waiting feel real: a business outcome tied to a date, a competitive move, a budget window.
This is the quality agents are furthest from. We run 20+ agents and they’ve closed millions, but there still isn’t a good AI account executive. Agents book, follow up, answer, invoice, and collect. They don’t get a reluctant buying committee to commit this quarter.
Even the AI-native quoting tools we’ve seen hard-cap what an agent can offer. Nue showed guided selling with a 55% discount cap built in. Price, terms, and the timing of the close stay with a human because companies don’t trust an agent with them yet.
#7. They Prepare Obsessively. Basic Mediocre Prep Is Now Nearly Free, So It Stopped Separating Anyone.
The best reps used to spend 10x to 100x longer preparing than mediocre reps. That gap was a real edge.
Now any rep can get a full account brief, recent news, likely objections, and the stakeholder map in two minutes. The gap closed. Everyone shows up prepared.
The honest read from our own team: the 1.5 sellers who stayed are not more knowledgeable or 2x faster because of AI prep tools. I don’t know of anyone who raised quota 40% because their reps got better research. Prep is table stakes. What the rep does with it in the room is the differentiator, which takes you back to #1 and #6.
#8. They Map and Sell to All the Key Stakeholders. One of Them Is Now an Agent.
A deal with one supporter is fragile. A deal with five is close to done. Still true.
What’s new is that the buyer’s AI is in the committee. Our own 10K agent evaluates vendors for us. It shortlisted one, then killed it within 12 hours on its own: premium pricing with no conversion data, multi-month minimums, and scarcity framing. In another case it picked a heat-mapping vendor (Microsoft Clarity) with no search or human evaluation at all.
Neither vendor had a rep in the room for that decision. The best reps now make sure everything a buyer’s agent reads holds up on its own: pricing pages, docs, API terms, case studies with real numbers.
#9. They’re Efficient With Their Time. The Best Reps Work the Leads Agents Surface.
Elite reps think in output per hour, cut losing deals early, and move fast on real signal.
The 2026 version: agents now generate and qualify more pipeline than a human team can cover, and the top reps concentrate on what the agents hand them. On the SaaStr AI stage, Salesforce and PayPal walked through roughly 8,000 leads a month that had never been called, now worked by agents, with meeting conversions up 50% in 14 weeks. Owner.com’s Kyle Norton shared that their reps average $2M+ in ARR each, about 20x closed-won to OTE versus the old 3x to 4x benchmark.
At SaaStr, full visibility into everything the agents touch is what lets 1.5 people focus only on the deals that need a human.
#10. New: They Take a Handoff From an Agent Without Restarting the Conversation.
This one didn’t exist when I wrote the original list.
By the time a human rep gets involved, an agent has often done the first three to five touches. Our Agentforce win-back campaign hit 72% open rates on about 1,000 sponsor leads who had ghosted us. Those leads came back warm, with a full thread of what they asked, what they clicked, and what they objected to.
The best reps read the entire history before the call and pick up exactly where the agent left off. The worst ones re-ask the discovery questions the buyer already answered. That wastes the buyer’s time and burns the warmth the agent built.
What 1.5 Sellers and 20 Agents Changed About This List
Sort the ten qualities by what happened to them:
- Commoditized by agents: personalizing the pitch (#2), treating every prospect well (#3), preparing (#7). Agents do these at volume, every time. A human gets no credit for them anymore.
- Raised to a minimum bar: product knowledge (#5). Your rep has to know more than your inbound agent.
- More valuable than ever: listening in the room (#1), helping the customer implement (#4), creating urgency and closing (#6), working the whole buying committee including its agents (#8).
- Changed shape: time efficiency (#9) now means working agent-surfaced pipeline, and the agent handoff (#10) is a skill in its own right.
The thread from the original post still holds. The best salespeople are prospect-centric and solve the buyer’s problem. What’s different is how much of the rest of the job an agent now does, which means fewer human sellers, each handling the parts of the deal only a human can do.

A great sales rep does most of the work for the prospect:
Does the scheduling
Does the demos
Solves the problem
Helps sell other stakeholders
Follows up
Simplifies deploymentYes, this is a lot more work than sending a Calendly link the next day, I do admit
